Kylee's Story

On January 27, 2011, 18 year old Kylee found herself in a deep sleep. This statement would seem typical for a teenager, unfortunately the circumstances surrounding Kylee's deep sleep were nowhere near "typical".

Kylee had been in the throes of kidney stone turmoil for months. With each new stone that would develop, an onslaught of worry accompanied. Will this be the last? Why do they keep coming? Doctors visits produced unanswered questions about the how and why of it all. After months of suffering, a new doctor was sought and his advice included a surgery that would aide in relief for our sweet girl.

The procedure was set to take place in a surgical center as the risk was explained to be low. It was a win, win situation. Get rid of the stones and we would have a happy girl on our hands. The surgery was uneventful. The doctor entered the waiting room after the surgery, assuring family that this had been a success. As soon as those words were out of his mouth, he was informed by the anesthesiologist that Kylee would not wake up. Years of experience from this anesthesiologist proved unsuccessful as they tried everything possible to bring her out of sedation. The situation became emergent and Kylee was transported to the local hospital via ambulance.

Once at the hospital tests were ordered to check for brain activity as her sleeping body could not come out of this anesthesia. Prayers were pouring in from all those that became aware of the situation. The longer this sweet girl slept, the more fierce the situation became. A CT scan of her brain was ordered to assess the situation. As Kylee started to wake up and tangible relief was felt by all, they were about to find that the battle had only just begun.

The results of the CT scan revealed a large tumor in Kylee's brain. Medical professionals often refer to these discoveries as incidentaloma's. Ever the optimists, Kylee and her family found this discovery to be heavens watchful eye granting mercy. Although large in size at the time of discovery, the nature of this tumor could have gone undetected as Kylee was experiencing no ill effects.

This family has found themselves in a situation that no one ever wishes for. They will have the opportunity to be the receivers of mercy and service from others as they start this uphill battle. Those of us who have the opportunity to love this family feel it an honor to return their kindness and generosity we have partaken of through the years. We are gathering "Kare for Kylee" here.
